MODERNISATION PATHS

Strategic assessment on implementation routes to solid modernization paths

START WITH THE SYSTEM YOU HAVE

Modernise where it creates value

Different generations of software carry different technical constraints. SolidArc identifies what should be preserved, what should be stabilised and what should change, then defines a practical path toward a system that can continue evolving.

SolidArc modernisation paths by system generation

Every modernisation journey starts somewhere different. SolidArc Software works from the software estate that exists today, identifies the constraints that matter, and defines an incremental route toward a maintainable modern .NET platform. From VB6 and .NET Framework through distributed systems, modern .NET, enterprise architecture and AI-enabled systems, SolidArc modernises incrementally rather than forcing unnecessary rewrites.

VB6 and client/server modernisation

SolidArc modernises VB6 and client/server estates by preserving valuable business behaviour and data while progressively replacing obsolete presentation, deployment and integration technology with maintainable modern .NET capabilities.

  1. Inventory the estate. Map VB6 applications, COM components, databases, scheduled jobs, file integrations, and ownership.
  2. Stabilise data and interfaces. Document database contracts and isolate risky integrations before changing the application surface.
  3. Extract business behaviour. Move critical rules into testable .NET services or domain components rather than mechanically translating forms.
  4. Replace by capability. Introduce modern .NET APIs, services, and user interfaces incrementally while old and new components coexist where necessary.
  5. Retire legacy deployment. Remove COM registration, desktop installation dependencies, and unsupported runtime requirements once the replacement is proven.

.NET Framework application modernisation

SolidArc modernises .NET Framework applications toward supported modern .NET while separating valuable business behaviour from IIS-era hosting, WCF, System.Web and infrastructure-specific dependencies.

.NET Framework ASP.NET WCF ASP.NET Core
  1. Assess compatibility. Catalogue target frameworks, third-party libraries, Windows-only dependencies, WCF endpoints, authentication, and hosting constraints.
  2. Separate application boundaries. Isolate business logic from System.Web, static service access, legacy configuration, and infrastructure-specific code.
  3. Move to supported .NET incrementally. Upgrade libraries and services in dependency order rather than attempting a single solution-wide conversion.
  4. Modernise hosting and integration. Introduce ASP.NET Core, dependency injection, configuration, observability, and appropriate HTTP or messaging contracts.
  5. Validate behaviour. Use integration tests and production telemetry to prove equivalent outcomes before retiring Framework components.

Distributed systems rationalisation

SolidArc rationalises distributed systems by identifying which service and integration boundaries still provide genuine business or operational value and which have become accidental complexity accumulated over time.

Services Messaging Integration Boundaries
  1. Map real boundaries. Identify service ownership, data ownership, message flows, failure modes, and cross-service transactions.
  2. Measure coupling. Find synchronous chains, duplicate models, retry storms, shared databases, and integrations created only by historical deployment choices.
  3. Collapse unnecessary distribution. Where boundaries provide no independent value, consolidate them into a modular application or simpler topology.
  4. Strengthen intentional integration. Keep messaging, APIs, and asynchronous workflows where they provide real isolation, scale, or interoperability.
  5. Standardise operations. Add consistent telemetry, health checks, configuration, deployment conventions, and explicit ownership.

Modern .NET platform uplift

SolidArc modernises existing .NET platforms by strengthening application composition, EF Core persistence and transaction boundaries, modularity, observability and production operations. A modern runtime alone does not guarantee a modern architecture.

.NET EF Core Modularity Observability
  1. Update the runtime baseline. Move applications and libraries onto supported .NET versions and current dependency baselines.
  2. Review application composition. Simplify dependency injection, configuration, hosting, background processing, and cross-cutting infrastructure.
  3. Refine data access. Review EF Core usage, transaction boundaries, query behaviour, migration strategy, and high-volume execution paths.
  4. Improve modularity. Make application modules, contracts, domain rules, and persistence boundaries explicit enough to evolve independently.
  5. Operationalise the platform. Add health checks, structured logging, metrics, tracing, deployment automation, and production diagnostics.

Architecture and modernisation at scale

SolidArc provides .NET architecture and modernisation for complex enterprise platforms where the runtime is no longer the primary constraint. SolidArc focuses on system boundaries, data ownership, execution paths, integration, deployment topology and the cost of change.

Architecture Data Ownership Boundaries Evolution
  1. Establish the architecture baseline. Document modules, services, databases, integrations, deployment topology, and operational constraints.
  2. Identify pressure points. Locate where coupling, duplicated behaviour, transaction design, data movement, or infrastructure slows delivery.
  3. Define target boundaries. Decide what should remain together, what should be modularised, and what genuinely requires independent deployment.
  4. Modernise by business capability. Sequence change around high-value use cases rather than technical layers alone.
  5. Create an evolutionary roadmap. Define implementation slices, validation criteria, rollback options, and measurable operational outcomes.

.NET 10, orchestration and intelligent systems

SolidArc applies .NET 10, controlled orchestration and AI-enabled capabilities within engineered enterprise software platforms while keeping workflows, domain policy, security, persistence and consequential actions explicit and controlled.

.NET 10 Orchestration Domain Policy AI
  1. Modernise the execution platform. Establish a current .NET baseline, explicit application boundaries, observability, health checks, and production-ready hosting.
  2. Make workflows explicit. Identify multi-step use cases, domain policies, transactional boundaries, and human approval points before introducing autonomous behaviour.
  3. Introduce AI where it adds value. Apply models and agents to bounded tasks with clear inputs, outputs, permissions, and fallback behaviour.
  4. Govern consequential actions. Separate read-only assistance from writes, approvals, external side effects, and security-sensitive operations.
  5. Evaluate in production terms. Measure correctness, latency, cost, failure behaviour, observability, and intervention paths.
